He'd been teaching now for almost a month and he was enjoying it immensely. His students were great - he had three classes that he lectured in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the good thing was, he was typically done by one in the afternoon. He'd spend two more hours in his office in case the students had questions and so that he could put grades into the computer when necessary.

It was just such an afternoon and he was waiting for Methos to come pick him up for the day - they were going out to dinner that night - when a knock at his door got his attention.

"Come in," he called out in Spanish. The door opened to reveal one of his students, a young American named Brian who was probably twenty years old if that. Brian smiled as he came in and closed the door. "What can I help you with, Brian?" Daniel continued in English.

"Well, I had some questions about your lecture on World War One," he said quietly as he sat down in front of Daniel's desk. Daniel nodded and leaned back in his chair.

"What kind of questions?"

"Well, more like observations, really," Brian said with a smile. What his professor didn't know was that Brian had fought in the first world war - for America - and then again in World War II and some of the things Daniel had spoken of, Brian either didn't remember happening or he remembered them a different way. Plus, it gave him a chance to spend time with the good looking man. Of course, Brian had seen the wedding band on Daniel's finger but that had never stopped Brian before...

Daniel slowly shook his head. "Not until my second ascension... when I remember everything that happened. I tried to destroy Anubis... one of the original system lords who was trying to become an ascended being. He would have had more power than anyone in the universe if he'd managed to do so. He wanted information about Atlantis... and I was the only one who knew how to get there. I eventually had to make a decision to either stay an ascended being or... go back to Earth and risk dying all over again. But I'd have my memories and I'd know how to find Atlantis and help defeat our biggest enemies... so I went back..."

He nodded, reaching a hand out to take his husband's hand, "And then you came back and found Atlantis.."

"Yeah... I found it... and Jack refused to let me go," Daniel said quietly, looking down at his plate, pushing one of the churros around before picking it up and taking a bite from it. "Said he couldn't risk sending me on what could be a one way mission. It would be almost three years before I would see Atlantis and I wasn't there but a day or so because I needed information from the Ancients and it was hidden in Atlantis. Then too... Jack was always holding me back... he never wanted me far from his reach or out of his sight... He was possessive." He looked up slowly. "I think that's part of why Brian terrifies me so much. Something in him reminds me of Jack..."

And Methos planned to kill him, just like he did Jack.

Methos kissed Daniel's forehead, "I'll stop him."

He had to. Needed to. He just wanted to be happy with his husband. Was that really so much to ask?

Daniel smiled softly and finished his breakfast. "I'll put this stuff away if you'll go find the practice swords you bought? I thought perhaps it might help work out some frustrations for us both to practice?"

He nodded, "Of course. I think I left them in the car after I bought them. I'll go grab them."

Daniel smiled, kissing his husband softly.

"I'll meet you on the back patio," he said quietly. He quickly cleaned up from breakfast, set another pot of coffee to brew and then headed to the back patio, waiting for Methos to join him.

Methos quickly headed out to the car, opening up trunk and pulling them out. He made his way to the back toward where Daniel was waiting.

Daniel smiled at him as he appeared and took one of the practice swords from his husband.

"So.. how long do I have to use these wooden things before you'll let me at the real swords?"

"I don't know, love." Methos shrugged, "It all depends how long it takes you to learn."

Then he brought up his bokken to the ready.

"Hmmm. How many students have you had?" He asked, copying Methos' stance as he spoke.

"I haven't had any since Lord Byron. But many." he gave a slow jab toward Daniel's side, that should be easy to block.

Daniel came down and made the block easily enough before making the same move against his husband.

"And how long ago was that?"

He swatted away Daniel's jab easily, "Late 1800's or so."

Daniel gave a slight yelp and moved to try and thrust at his husband again.

Methos blocked the sloppy thrust, quickly bringing his bokken around in a flourish toward Daniel's neck.

Daniel moved back quickly, throwing up both hand and sword to stop that move, realizing his mistake a move to late.

"While I suppose getting your fingers chopped off is preferable to your head, probably best to keep your hand out of the picture, love." he lowered the bokken, "And keep your thrusts quick and close, wide archs leave you open for attack."

Daniel nodded at his husband's words. "Instinct, I suppose, to do that." He went back to his beginning stance and waited for his husband to do the same.

Far enough away not to be felt, Brian watched through binoculars, chuckling softly to himself. Cute... the immortal was trying to teach his husband to sword fight...

Methos nodded too, then took a quick thrust toward Daniel's thigh.

Daniel blocked and then thrust back towards Methos' open left side.

He dodged it, "Good! You're getting better, already!"

Daniel circled his husband, looking for another opening and thrusting up towards his husband's chest as he did so.

Methos brought his bokken up in a quick block, then kicked a leg out to knock Daniel off balance.

Daniel wasn't expecting that and his knee gave on him even as he brought his sword down to try and catch his husband's leg.
