He'd been teaching now for almost a month and he was enjoying it immensely. His students were great - he had three classes that he lectured in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the good thing was, he was typically done by one in the afternoon. He'd spend two more hours in his office in case the students had questions and so that he could put grades into the computer when necessary.

It was just such an afternoon and he was waiting for Methos to come pick him up for the day - they were going out to dinner that night - when a knock at his door got his attention.

"Come in," he called out in Spanish. The door opened to reveal one of his students, a young American named Brian who was probably twenty years old if that. Brian smiled as he came in and closed the door. "What can I help you with, Brian?" Daniel continued in English.

"Well, I had some questions about your lecture on World War One," he said quietly as he sat down in front of Daniel's desk. Daniel nodded and leaned back in his chair.

"What kind of questions?"

"Well, more like observations, really," Brian said with a smile. What his professor didn't know was that Brian had fought in the first world war - for America - and then again in World War II and some of the things Daniel had spoken of, Brian either didn't remember happening or he remembered them a different way. Plus, it gave him a chance to spend time with the good looking man. Of course, Brian had seen the wedding band on Daniel's finger but that had never stopped Brian before...

Daniel was too shocked to move but move he finally did, running to grab the pistol from their bedroom where it was kept as he moved back to where his husband lay. He had no idea what the hell a shot like that was going to do to Methos but he'd be damned if he let Brian anywhere near him until his husband woke.

He picked up the receiver of the phone.

"You fucking bastard! I didn't call him in!"

"Consider it a warning. I'm done wasting my time. When he wakes, you tell him to meet me at the campus training field in two nights. He's to bring you with him." The line went dead and Daniel didn't know what to do as he tried to hold his husband, shaking and crying. When time passed and Methos didn't wake, Daniel went for his husband's wallet and found MacLeod's number, calling it and waiting for an answer.

"Gods... Methos, please... please wake up... oh god... damn it... come one, MacLeod... please pick up the phone..."

Methos stirred, his fingers twitching, but he didn't yet wake. He just made a gruggling noise that might have just been nothing more than the release of air from his lungs.

With no answer to his call, Daniel hung up the phone and proceeded to call Joe Dawson instead. This time, the phone picked up on the first ring and he babbled out everything that had happened and that Methos was, essentially dead and that Daniel didn't know what to do for him or how to make him wake. Joe tried to calm the younger human and put him on hold to call MacLeod himself. The immortal promised Joe he'd be on the next plane out there and Joe relayed that to Daniel. Not that it calmed the mortal any. He dropped the receiver of the phone and finally just pulled Methos into his lap, holding and rocking him, not caring at the blood covering his clothes or the floor where he sat.

Suddenly he gasped, his eyes wide. He looked panicked and confused. Methos sucked air into his lungs in large breaths, looking in every direction clearly in a daze and not knowing where he was.

Daniel let out a shocked sound as Methos came back to him and he held him, watching him intently.

"What... oh god... are you... are you okay?" The wound was completely healed and Daniel was still amazed at that but to see his husband's eyes open and to hear him breathing... it was... he wasn't sure how to process any of it.

He blinked looking up at him, for a moment no recognition in his eyes. There was just fear and panic. After several more gasps, he registers thoughts and remembers.

"D-Daniel...?" he rasped out, then starts coughing, "What... what happened?"

Daniel is shaking but he manages to answer.

"It... it was Brian... he... he called and I couldn't leave the phone because he said he had a sniper's rifle on you and that he'd kill you if I warned you... but then you came inside and... he shot you anyways... I... I didn't know what to do, Methos... I panicked... I... I called Joe Dawson.... I didn't... I'm sorry... oh gods... I didn't know how to help you..."

Methos reached a shaky hand to Daniel's face, "I'm fine, Daniel. I'll be alright.."

He sat up, hand clutching his previously destroyed skull, wiping away blood, "You called Joe?"

Daniel nodded, his shaking getting a little worse now, the shock actually setting in it seemed.

"I... I didn't know what t-to do... I got your... your wallet and I found MacLeod's number... I-I tried to call him f-first but there was no... no answer so I called... called Joe... I-I'm sorry..."

"No.. no, Daniel, it's fine... you've nothing to be sorry about." he took his husband in his arms to try and calm him, "What about Brian? What did he say?"

Daniel clung to Methos tightly, burying his face into his husband's neck.

"That he.. he wants to meet you... in two days... school's training field... he said you had to bring me with you..."

"Why in the bloody hell, would I bring you with me? Does he think I'm stupid?" Methos scoffed, "It's not like I can expect him to be playing by any set of rules... why should I?"

Daniel shook at the intensity behind his husband's voice.

"I'm... i'm sorry... I was just... telling you w-what he said..."

He blinked, "Daniel... I wasn't yelling at you. I'm just... I want Brian dead. I don't care about the rules he wants me to play. I'm going to turn the tables on him. He likes to be in control, and I plan to take that control away."

Daniel nodded and clung to Methos again, completely forgetting to tell him that MacLeod was already on his way to Spain...

"How?" he asked softly.

"He isn't the only one who knows how to fire a gun." He had a very dark look in his eyes.

Daniel nodded and just held there, forgetting that they were still on the kitchen floor surrounded by blood and glass.

"I should... I should get washed up." Methos said, suddenly.

Daniel's grip tightened on his lover when Methos went to pull away.

"Don't leave me alone," he whispered softly. "I didn't know... what would happen to you... being shot like that... I was afraid you... you wouldn't come back."

"Alright..." he stopped trying to get up, "We should at least get out of the blood... and broken glass."

Daniel swallowed hard and nodded slowly, moving to stand and keep at least some sort of a hold on his husband as he did so. He then took in the mess around them and everything seemed to crash inside of him and he let go and ran into the bathroom, getting sick rather violently.

Methos followed after, his concern palpable. He walked into the bathroom stripping off his bloody shirt and tossing it aside.

He comes up next to him, "Daniel...?"

Daniel knelt there for a moment, shaking still, tears stinging his eyes and the vile taste in his throat. He dry heaved a couple more times before he finally pushed to his feet and rinsed out his mouth at the sink.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, meeting his husband's worried gaze in the mirror. "I just... it all sorta just hit me at once..."

He nodded, rubbing his back. "I understand."

Daniel turned around slowly and brushed a hand through his husband's hair.

"I love you," he whispered harshly, knowing he still had tears in his eyes. "I love you so very much..."
